Ideas for the Create a Challenge Food Badge



  • Make lists of your favourite foods – using headings such as breakfasts, desserts, snacks, drinks, main meals, vegetarian food
  • Find out about particular diets that people might follow for health reasons. Cook a dish that is suitable for one of the following diets: diabetic, gluten-free, low fat, lactose-free
  • Grow some vegetables at home
  • Cook a dish that is a family favourite and bring the recipe and a photo to Guides
  • Try a food from a different country/culture that you have never tried before
  • Cook a food from a different country/culture. What different ingredients did you use? Did you like it?
  • Use a supermarket catalogue to cut out pictures of foods that you should eat often, eat sometimes and eat rarely (on special occasions) and make a poster
  • Bake something in an oven and bring it to Guides to share
  • Fry or scramble an egg or cook bacon, sausage, or something similar, and be able to make toast
  • Help to cook something outdoors (on a barbeque, fire, portable stove, solar oven etc)
  • Demonstrate that you can use cooking equipment safely : Sharp knives, peelers, stove, oven, saucepans, frying pans, chopping boards (how to keep them clean and germ free), electric mixers, microwave oven
  • Explain and demonstrate the importance of hygiene and cleanliness in the kitchen
  • For a group of friends or your family, make a main course using convenience foods and then make the same dish entirely from fresh ingredients. (for example, Spaghetti Bolognese can be made using a ready-mix/jar of sauce or from fresh ingredients like tomatoes, garlic and basil – you could even try using fresh pasta. Discuss which tastes better and why? How does the cost compare?
  • Plan, cook and serve a meal for a group of friends, your Patrol or your family to celebrate a special occasion
  • Make a dish using a specialist piece of cooking equipment, such as a microwave, slow cooker, ice cream maker, bread machine, pasta maker, thermomix, blender or griddle

    Hostess


    This syllabus is good for enrolment nights at a Guide unit
  • Prepare an invitation that invites the family of a Tweenie to their enrolment. Ask them to assess you for your hostess badges
  • Write a letter thanking your guest for assessing you for the Hostess Badge
  • At home, prepare supper to serve to your guests (sandwiches, pikelets, cup cakes, scones, slice, golf balls etc). Mum can help but you must do most of the work
  • Welcome and introduce yourself to your guests when they arrive at Guides. Look after them for the night
  • Prepare and serve a hot drink and the food you prepared at home
  • Wash and dry any dishes used at Girl Guide camps we have Orderly that complete these tasks

    Cake Decorating


  • Cover a fruitcake with Royal icing, decorate in a simple but attractive design. Piped or molded flowers, silver/gold leaves, may be used
  • Show skill in writing with a fine piping tube and in lattice and basket weave
  • Know how to make three different kinds of icing, and what each kind is suitable for
  • Using piping techniques to decorate a cake or biscuits
  • Know how to melt chocolate successfully and use it to decorate a cake or biscuits
